About

The Serpukhov Museum has one of the largest museum collections in the Moscow region. In total, the museum's collections number more than 46.7 thousand items. Initially, its building was a residential mansion of the Serpukhov merchants Maraev family. The collection is based on paintings that the owner of the house, Anna Marayeva, acquired from the famous collector Yuri Vsevolodovich Merlin. At the end of 1920, the Serpukhov Museum opened its doors to the general public.

Art historians call the museum the "Little Tretyakov Gallery." The collection includes icons, paintings by I. Aivazovsky, V. Polenov, I. Shishkin, I. Levitan, V. Vereshchagin, the Makovsky brothers, V. Vasnetsov and many others, as well as paintings and objects from Italy, France, the Netherlands, Flanders and Germany.

The glory of the museum consists of the works of N. Goncharova. Nine paintings and more than forty graphic works by Natalia Sergeevna are the adornment of the Russian collection. These masterpieces of the Russian avant-garde serve as objects of attraction for tourists from all over the world.

Currently, the Serpukhov Museum actively cooperates with regional and federal museums of the Russian Federation, participates in exhibitions, conferences and other events. The Serpukhov Museum exhibits are attracted to exhibitions in Russia and abroad — in Italy, Germany, the USA, Korea, Croatia, Monaco, Great Britain, Finland.

Today, the Serpukhov Museum is able to present a lively dialogue with the past and surprise with the authentic creations of great masters.

The museum's modern exposition consists of sections: Russian art of the XVIII – early XX centuries; Western European art of the XVI–XIX centuries; the local history exposition "Serpukhov — the key city of Moscow Rus". The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists and large-scale inter-museum exhibition projects.

The exhibit in the courtyard of the museum is a captured heavy German field howitzer from the Great Patriotic War. From it, in 1941, the Nazis shelled Serpukhov from the Ochkovsky Mountains. During the Red Army's counteroffensive near Moscow, the enemy was pushed back 70-100 km from Serpukhov. In early 1942, an exhibition of captured weapons was held on the III International Square (now Lenin Square) and at the Lesnaya station. This howitzer was also shown on the square. The howitzer was transported from the exhibition to the courtyard of the museum.
A fact from its history: it was not until the 1970s that it was discovered that the cannon was loaded. She was taken to the landfill, but during the neutralization, the shell exploded inside and the barrel exploded.
